A Long-established Access to Training centre is to be closed as part of a Bradford Council shake-up.

The Keighley centre's job search service will be taken "on the road" to offer people advice in their own neighbourhoods.

The separate training facilities at the North Street base will be closed and staff moved elsewhere within the council's employment and community development departments.

Access to Training managers proposed the changes after a "best value" review last year called for services to be targeted on people in most need.

Research showed that the centre was little used by adults from the most deprived areas of Keighley and hard-to-reach groups in the community.

Usage was further limited by the lack of childcare facilities and lack of disabled access to the first-floor centre.

Job search was used by four out of five visitors, with the remaining 20 per cent attending computer and food hygiene courses.

The job search will in future be based at nearby Keighley Training Group, which already runs a job search service.

The advisors will work from a number of sites across Keighley, including the soon-to-be-opened Sure Start centres in Highfield and Braithwaite.

Money saved by closing Keighley Access to Training will be given to Keighley Voluntary Services to support community groups.

Access to Training opened in 1982 as Keighley Centre Against Unemployment, providing advice, support and drop-in facilities.

Keighley Trades Council, which established the centre with Bradford Council, pulled out in 1984 when the venture was banned from political activity.

A gradual move towards training led to the name change in 1989 and the centre officially becoming part of Bradford Council.
