The new watchdogs for local health services are opening their doors over the next few weeks.

Patient and Public Involvement Forums for Airedale Primary Care Trust and Airedale NHS Trust will meet in public.

The PPI forums -- part of a national network -- were set up last year to replace the long-running community health councils.

The new independent groups, whose members include local people, aim to give patients, carers and communities a greater voice.

They research local people's views, recommend changes to the day-to-day delivery of health services, advise patients and discuss important health issues.

Separate forums cover Airedale NHS Trust, which runs local hospitals, and Airedale PCT, which oversees GP surgeries.

The NHS trust forum will meet on Wednesday, from 5-7pm, in the Education Centre, at Airedale Hospital.

Robert Allen, the trust's chief executive, will explain the hospital's efforts to achieve foundation status and Sue Harle will speak about patient advice and liaison services.

The PCT forum will meet on May 6 (7-9pm), at Bingley Methodist Church, to speak about the trust's estate strategy and consultation over Bingley Hospital.

Olivia Butterworth, development worker for the two forums, said both meetings would allow people to learn about what forums could do.

She said: "There will be an opportunity to ask questions at the end of the meetings.

"It is important that patients and public attend meetings to enable their voices to be heard and to ensure they take a real part in making a difference."

Anyone wanting more details can speak to Olivia, or forum administrator Francis Spencer, on 01535 665258.
