When members of Bradford and Keighley Youth Parliament come together for the first time this year, they will not be doing anything so conventional as holding a "sitting".

Instead, youth parliament sittings are to be given the more upbeat name of "wot's ur flava?", which members (MYPs) believe young people will relate to more easily.

"Wot's ur flava?" will today involve reports on MYPs' recent activities and debates on issues relevant to young people, as well as showcasing young people's talents with displays and musical performances.

The debates will run from 10am to noon, in the Council Chambers at City Hall, Bradford.

They will be followed by an afternoon of activities in Centenary Square, from 1-5pm, including live music, street entertainers and workshops on topics such as anti-racism, disability and teenage pregnancy.

Information stands from organisations such as Connexions, Pregnancy Advice, Bradford Vision and the Young People's Information Shop will also be there.

Young people's artwork, created in district-wide workshops run throughout the week by community arts group Artworks will be on show.

Since the youth parliament last met in February, 2003, members have been meeting local councillors, MPs and representatives from international organisations to put over young people's points of view on topical issues.

They have been holding area forums with young people across the district and participating in events such as the community cohesion days.

Bradford Council's executive member for education, Councillor David Ward, said: "The Bradford and Keighley Youth Parliament plays an important role, taking on issues which are important to young people and engaging them in the debate about what is happening in the district.

"This new name for sittings is just one way members are shaping the parliament to their own needs and helping to make the whole democratic process more relevant to young people."
