A SHORTAGE of retained firefighters at Skipton Fire Station means that at certain times only one fire engine can be taken out to deal with emergencies.
The station has seen a recent slump in numbers due to people leaving through retirement or ill health.
There are currently 14 people on the rota and it is hoped this can be boosted by at least four. "It's a big commitment," said group manager for Skipton Dave McCabe."
And the Fire and Rescue Service is also hoping to attract at least three new firefighters to the community-based service at Grassington.
It plays a front-line role in fire prevention and firefighting in the Dales.
"We are the first responders to many incidents in the Dales," said Grassington's Leading Firefighter Andrew Howick.Anyone who is interested in joining can contact Mr McCabe, at Skipton Fire Station on 01756 692560.
