Queensbury's decision to rest four key players before the Jack Senior Bradford Cup final looked to have backfired when visitors Westgate Redoubt raced into an early 16-point lead in their last game of the Premier campaign.

Bury suffered a first-half nightmare but still managed to peg back the score with two penalties from loose forward Paul Drake.

The Wakefield side are renowned for their indiscipline and true to form they continued with their wayward ways on the restart and Drake cheerfully accepted the chance to slot over another three penalty awards - one of which was from the halfway line.

Westgate then scored the best try of the match when the ball was shipped through several pairs of hands and wingman Matt Hudson crossed.

Mark Hobble missed the conversion but added a penalty to put them 22-10 up. Bury prop Andrew Senior lifted the spirits when he broke a half-tackle to scramble over on all fours and Drake hit the extras.

Redoubt's woes continued when they had a player put in the sin bin for dissent and Bury wingman Darren Brown took advantage to cross in the corner for one of his trademark efforts. It was left to the sure-footed Drake to kick the touchline conversion and ensure the spoils 24-22.

Queensbury prop forward Darren Wilkinson celebrated his unbroken cup and league appearances for the season by collecting the man-of-the-match award.

Victoria Rangers suffered a hangover in more ways than one as they brought their curtain down at Illingworth.

The Vics lost 66-14 after staging their end- of-season bash the night before and they made the trip with no substitutes.

After ten minutes' play they were down to just eleven very young lads following injuries but they stuck to their guns and posted tries from full back Danny Cade and wingman Aidan Booth to only trail 28-8 at the break.

The experience and extra legs took its toll in the second half but Danny Dixon scored a consolation try in the corner and scrum half Lenny Dalladay slotted over the conversion to complete a spirited performance.

Clayton's hectic chase for a Division One promotion spot remains well on course following the 26-10 victory at Thornhill Trojans.

The Villagers now travel to Halifax Irish tonight seeking the two points that will bring them level with second-placed Brighouse Rangers with the added luxury of games in hand.

Clayton put Thornhill under the cosh and raced into a 14-0 interval lead. They totally dominated the whole of the game and centre Mark Schofield and loose forward Craig Pickthall both crossed for a brace. Prop John Parkinson kicked his five out of five goal attempts.

Queensbury A fielded nine players aged uner 19 in their Division Two encounter against Emley Moor. The youngsters gave notice that they are the new kids on the block with a laudable show before falling 30-8.

Loose forward Danny Holmes scored tries either side of the break but the loss of player-coach Nathan Varley with a leg injury proved an obstacle to difficult to overcome.

Division Four Wyke travelled to Brighouse Rangers A full of confidence after beating them easily the week before on home soil.

The turning point of the match came after Wyke had clawed their way back into the match at 14-12. Prop Howard Carr kicked a penalty into touch and the ball bounced back into play after hitting a tree. Referee Paul Beeby decided to 'play on' and the Brighouse winger ran the length of the field unopposed to plant the ball with both sides looking on in amazement.

A furious Wyke tried to reason that even in Super League if the ball hits the stand and returns on to the pitch you never continue the play -- but to no avail. They then went on to lose 40-16 with Ian Watkinson, James Barraclough and Liam Hay crossing for tries. Carr kicked two goals.

In Division Six, Thornton won 22-14 at Cowling Harlequins. Lee Stafford, Matt Fullen, Damien Birkett and new boy Clement Muciti reached the whitewash as Thornton fought back from a 14-10 half- time deficit.

Wyke A completed a barren afternoon for the club with a 28-16 defeat at Greetland All Rounders A. Veterans Andy Burd and Lee Cousen were the pick of the side and Michael Evans, Jon Holdsworth and Aaron Priestley scored the tries. Andy Patchett kicked two conversions.
