Health bosses are to look again at proposals to relocate a GP surgery after an outcry over the plans.

The plan is to close Dr Shoshanna Gowa's surgery in Beckside Road, Lidget Green, and transfer patients to the Horton Park Avenue Health and Social Care Centre.

It is being considered because the existing premises are too small to provide modern primary care.

But after a public consultation the board of Bradford City Teaching Primary Care Trust has been asked to consider all alternatives, amid fears by patients and local councillors the community will be left without a doctor.

A Trust spokesman said: "The proposal reflects local people's concerns over a move to the Horton Park Centre and their wish for Dr Gowa's surgery to remain in Lidget Green if possible."

The Labour councillor for Great Horton, the Reverend Paul Flowers, said he welcomed the move. "The important thing is they have acknowledged there is a continuing need to provide primary care facilities, with a GP in Lidget Green," he said.

"Lots of people rely on public transport and it would be a problem if the surgery was outside the area."

A board meeting yesterday was told new premises had to be found for Dr Gowa, who has 1,500 patients, because his surgery is no longer large enough to meet the practice's needs, but it was asked to look at all other possible arrangements.

A report to the board outlines the outcome of the public consultation, which included two well attended public meetings and 20 written responses. Nearly all expressed concern at the move and the negative impact it would have on the community of Lidget Green.

The PCT has admitted that following the move of Dr John Hardaker's surgery in Hollingwood Lane to Clayton, the closure of another surgery serving Lidget Green, would leave the area without a GP.

Patients also said they would prefer to keep a local GP service than relocate to the Horton Park Centre, which would provide a wider range of services.

Other areas of concern by patients include a lack of public transport, pharmacy access, disabled access to Horton Park and the appointment system.

No comments were received in favour of the move.
