More than sixty windows have been smashed in an orgy of wrecking at a Keighley primary school.

It is believed a weapon such as a golf club was used to break the windows, some of which were double-glazed or reinforced with wire mesh.

The cost of replacing the glass, at Guard House Primary School, is likely to run into thousands of pounds.

During the incident, on Wednesday evening last week, the vandals also set fire to a piece of playground equipment.

This week head teacher Sandra Firm said she was sickened by the attacks, and echoed police appeals for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

She said: "Whoever was responsible has been round the back of the school and smashed every window - in classrooms, the hall, kitchen and staff room.

"We think they've used something like a golf club to bash and bash at them. It's sickening.

"There was glass everywhere and two cleaners came in for a couple of days to clean up all the mess - I am very grateful to them.

"It will cost thousands of pounds to repair the damage, and although we have insurance there is a limit to how much is covered and it will lead to an increase in our premiums next year. At the end of the day money will have to be found by the school.

"There would have been a considerable amount of noise - some of the windows had been hit repeatedly with a lot of force - so someone must have heard something. I ask anyone who can help to come forward. Also I would urge parents to ask where their boy or girl was that evening.

"It is wanton and pointless vandalism which has caused a lot of disruption to the school, but also those who carry out such attacks are putting their own safety at risk." Anyone with information about the incident - which happened between 7.30 and 8.30pm - is asked to contact the Keighley Police helpdesk on 01535 617059 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
