The incident happened as a 20-year-old local woman was waiting for the 7.31pm train to Leeds, on April 3. A man followed her into the railway station at 7.15pm and after making indecent comments, assaulted her.
Acting Sergeant Rob Pedley, of British Transport Police, said: "It was raining heavily and the assailant, victim and other passengers were all stood on the covered slope leading to the Leeds-bound platform.
"We know there were a middle-aged couple and two groups of males also waiting for the train.
"One of the groups of males was approached and spoken to by the victim and tried to stop the man getting into the same carriage as the woman.
The victim was badly shaken, but physically uninjured.
A 34-year-old local man has been arrested in connection with the incident and released on police bail pending further inquiries.
