A husband and wife kicked up a stink after discovering raw sewage in their street.

Michael and Kathleen Woollard, of Cliffe Crescent, Riddlesden, were both preparing for work when they spotted a malfunctioning drain in their street.

Michael said: "I noticed it when I set off for work at around 8.30am.

"It was so powerful, it had blown the drain off.

"When I left it, it was spewing out sewage from the new housing estate up at Swine Lane.

"They've just put in this new drainage system for the new houses up there, that aren't yet fully complete.

"At the time they put their plans forward, we said the drainage system couldn't cope with so many houses.

"Children live on our street and it absolutely stinks.

"It was spewing out excrement, toilet paper and all sorts."

The 46-year-old warehouse worker and his wife have lived in the street for seven years.

He said he had reported the problem to Yorkshire Water before and he had seen Yorkshire Water working on the drain.

Wife Kathleen added: "The manhole cover was blown off.

"I rang Yorkshire Water but they said someone else, a resident maybe, had already reported it.

"There are two houses close to the leak, one with an elderly gentleman living there, and it would have been worse for them."

A spokesman for Yorkshire Water said it had received a call regarding the problem from a Cliffe Crescent resident last Friday. He added: "It was a blockage of a combined sewer overflow at Morton cemetery and we made it a priority one.

"We dispatched a crew within the day and found the reason for the problem was a blockage."

The spokesman said workers were unsure what exactly caused the blockage, but jetted the system so it would hopefully not happen again.
