A seven-point plan to tackle town centre traffic snarl-ups will be put before politicians next week.

Keighley Area Committee will decide whether to adopt £200,000 of proposed measures put forward by its Transport Forum.

The committee, Bradford Council's local decision-making body, has already agreed to give £20,000 towards suitable improvements.

Forum members, who come from various organisations, have spent months thrashing out potential solutions to Keighley's long-running congestion problems.

They insist the seven suggestions are short-term measures and research will continue into long-term solutions.

The proposals are:

l Staggering the existing pelican crossing next to the Cavendish Hotel so that traffic will continuously flow in at least one direction

l Banning right turns in both directions between Lawkholme Lane and Cavendish Street, in order to aid buses and pedestrians

l Removing the Cavendish Street loading bay opposite the Hanover Street junction, so right-turning vehicles do not block through traffic

l Reversing traffic flow in Church Street and replacing High Street/North Street junction signals with a new pelican crossing

l Installing traffic lights at the High Street, Bridge Street and Oakworth Road roundabout, improving control of traffic through the town centre

l Banning right turns in both directions between Lawkholme Lane and Hard Ings Road, to reduce both the congestion and risky manoeuvres

l Cutting delays at the Oakworth Road, West Lane and Suresnes Road junction with either traffic lights or right-turn bans.

The area committee is expected to approve the staggered Cavendish Street crossing, subject to funding been found. Members are also likely to call for more detailed plans of the other proposed measures, in readiness for public consultation.

The Transport Forum is made up of Bradford Council, Keighley Town Council, traffic police, highways officers and public transport companies.

Over the past ten months members have discussed potential solutions to the congestion, drawing on the findings of a major traffic flow survey.

Research showed that every day South Street, Hard Ings Road, Skipton Road and Bradford Road were each used by more than 20,000 vehicles.

Cllr Andrew Mallinson, chairman of both the forum and area committee, believed the new measures would have a positive impact on town centre traffic.

He said discussions would continue on long-term solutions such as an eastern bypass and a number of gyratory systems.
