Opera North -- Eight Little Greats: Il Tabarro (Puccini) and Love's Luggage Lost (Rossini) -- The Grand Theatre, Leeds
What better way to ease an opera first-timer into the world of the genre than to see two of these "little greats".
Opera North's collection of bite-size performances are more accessible and digestable slices of operatic pie, none lasting more than 90 minutes.
Il Tabarro was a subtitled drama about forbidden love and murderous jealously. Nina Pavlovski in the lead role of Georgetta was astounding.
Love's Luggage Lost was the most surreal and camp piece of theatre I have ever seen in my life.
Turning opera's somewhat rigid and pompous reputation on its head, this was an hilarious operetta about mistaken identity, featuring outrageous performances from its six-strong cast.
From on-stage costume changes -- y-fronts galore -- to quirky dance sequences this was a pure joy to behold and something I imagine does not come along very often.
