Darts champion John "Boy" Walton's dad has hit double top by scooping a Best Neighbour award for the second year running.

Generous Jack Walton spent the £50 he won last year on paint to spruce up the Bierley cul-de-sac where he lives.

That and other good deeds led to his neighbours nominating him again - and to a second victory in the Yorkshire Metropolitan Housing Best Neighbour contest.

The 67-year-old grandad, of Bayne Drive, was nominated for "selflessly helping out everyone, young and old, day in and day out."

His son John, 42, who won the Embassy World Professional Darts title in 2001 and is now known professionally as The Tyke, said: "My dad is Jack by name and Jack by nature. He is a Jack of all trades and can turn his hand to anything.

"He has always enjoyed helping people. He's brilliant."

After last year's victory Jack bought paint and, along with neighbour David Preston, cleaned and painted coping stones on garden walls in his street.

The dad-of-two is always lending a hand, from mending punctures on children's bikes to gardening, shelving and decorating. He said: "My neighbours were good enough to nominate me so I have done something in return. If they get stuck, I help them and they help me."

Retired Jack's working life included driving lorries, shop-fitting, working in a garage and as a chauffeur. "That's why I can turn my hand to so many different jobs," he said. "I like to keep busy now I've retired. I am a 'Jack' of all trades and master of none!"

He and wife Dorothy have lived in Bayne Drive for six years and say they love the community spirit.

"I have great neighbours," he said. "We will gather in the middle of the street for a chin-wag and if we don't see someone for a couple of days we will ask around or visit them. I think that it's important."

Neighbour Peter Austin, 47, one of many to nominate Jack, said: "He's just the best neighbour you can have. I've nominated him both years and I'll do it again because Jack will just do anything for anybody."
