Two Bradford-based organisations which provide vital services for homeless people have received more than £6,000 between them from a charity campaign backed by the Telegraph & Argus.

A total of £6,400 was raised in Bradford during a campaign run by the charity StreetSmart in November and December last year.

Diners at participating restaurants added £1 to their bills, to go to the charity.

Nationally StreetSmart raised £380,000 for homeless organisations across the country.

The campaign is held each year in the run-up to Christmas, traditionally the busiest time for restaurants.

The Bradford money has been divided between CHAS Housing Aid, which received £4,000, and Bradford Day Shelter, which received £2,400.

Neal Heard, director of Manningham-based CHAS, said the money would go towards a van used to collect donations of furniture and clothing used to help homeless people settle into accommodation.

"We're delighted to have this money," he said. "The StreetSmart campaign is an easy, painless way of donating money to the homeless. One pound from each table isn't much to give, but it really makes a difference."

The van will be used to collect donations of furniture, cookers, fridges, household goods and clothing which are then sold in affordable packages for low-income households.

"Single homeless people who are re-homed get a grant of around £400 - £800 for families - which isn't a lot to spend on furnishing," said Mr Heard.

"Our packages cost £55 and include a bed, or beds if there are children, table, chairs, wardrobe, drawers, a three-piece suite and sideboard.

"Last year we made 3,500 collections of goods and sent out 579 full packs, 151 part loads, and 678 white goods (cookers and fridges)."

Some of the furniture goes to the CHAS workshop for the charity's Reuse It project. The furniture-making and restoring workshop, launched earlier this year, is staffed by trainees who were formerly unemployed. They carry out repairs to furniture and make new items.

CHAS also collects spare furniture from companies such as Grattan and spare timber from joineries and DIY stores.

Bradford Day Shelter received £2,400 of the StreetSmart money. Based near the city centre, it provides services for single people who are homeless, or in poor housing and offers meals, laundry and bathing and a clothing store.

There are classes in computers, cooking and carpentry and advice is available on issues such as housing and drug and alcohol problems.

The restaurants taking part in last year's StreetSmart campaign were: Yo yo's cafe bar, Little Germany; The Aakash, Cleckheaton; Bossa Nova, Shipley; Thai Fever, Shipley; La Rue's, Saltaire; The Old Tramshed, Saltaire; Mantra, Burley-in-Wharfedale and the Koh-I-Noor, Bradford, which has since closed.
