Dean Windass could face a ban after being charged with improper conduct by the Football Association.

Windass has until Tuesday to respond to the charge which refers to City's heated clash with Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on February 28.

Ronnie Wallwork, who was on loan from West Brom at the time, has already pleaded guilty to the same offence. He was hit with a one-match suspension and fined £2,000.

The game saw City's Jason Gavin and Forest striker Marlon King both sent off after an ugly flare-up. But the FA charges follow scenes at the final whistle when angry players surrounded referee Trevor Kettle to protest about Forest's winning goal.

City claimed at the time that Wallwork had been fouled in the build-up to Gareth Taylor's stoppage-time winner.

Bryan Robson said after the game: "Referees see things in different ways to us sometimes. But when you're battling you deserve better decisions than what we got."

The charge against Windass has come as a shock to the club who are understood to be unhappy that it has taken the FA two months before deciding to act.

City were warned about their disciplinary record after seven players were sent off last season. They have had five red cards since.

l A mistake from Gareth Edds led to the only goal as Australia under-23s were beaten 1-0 in Tunisia last night.
