Emily Vayro celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by family and friends in an Ilkley residential home this week.

Mrs Varyo, who lived on her own until the age of 98 after her husband's death, had a party at the Homecroft Residential Home in Ilkley.

She moved to the home just over a year ago after a fall but until then had cared for herself in her own bungalow in Masham.

Mrs Varyo was born at Dallowgill near Masham. The family moved to Masham after her father died, and later moved to Maltby.

She married her husband John and the couple went to live to Workshop where he was a gardener.

They later moved to Leeds and then retired to Masham.

Mrs Varyo celebrated her 100th birthday with her daughter Mrs Joyce Bailey and with other family members, as well as friends and staff at the residential home.

Mrs Bailey said of her mother: "She didn't go out a lot, she was a home loving person. She enjoyed seeing her daughter and her grandchildren, and she missed my dad when he died."

The home's assistant manager Mrs Vivienne Clarke said it was very rare for someone to still be caring for themselves at home at the age of 98.

She added: "She has been absolutely amazing and she continues to be absolutely amazing.

"She is a little deaf but apart from that she does really well."
