Pudsey St Lawrence have been boosted in their quest to retain the leadership of the Specialist Ducting Supplies First Division.

Former Yorkshire spinner Ian Fisher, now with Gloucestershire, will play for them tomorrow at Cleckheaton.

"That will strengthen our batting and our bowling on what is likely to be a wet wicket," said Saints' team manager Chris Gott.

"Cleckheaton find it difficult to keep moisture off the square because of the slope there."

As for the match itself, Gott said: "It will be difficult getting runs on a rain-affected wicket against their overseas bowler Faisal Irfan and Ian Austin."

But Gott can't hide his delight at leading the table, although he admits it is "very early days".

He said: "We are pretty happy because we didn't have a great season last year for various reasons and we wanted to get off to a good start this year to regain our confidence.

"You cannot ask for any more than two wins from two games, but we thought we had lost two or three times at Baildon last Saturday in a great game of cricket.

"However, we clawed our way back into it each time, and it is pleasing too that we showed grit.

"We got a reasonable score of 205 for eight, but only ended up winning by eight runs because one of our lads took a great catch on the boundary. Baildon are a good side."

In contrast, Cleckheaton were shot out for 72 at Spen Victoria last weekend and lost by nine wickets.

"We didn't perform very well and they bowled quite well," said Austin. "It was just one of those days. But we are a very young side and therefore we are going to have our ups and downs.

"We will have days when we are toppled like last Saturday, but if we play to our ability we will beat some good sides and give some very good sides a run for their money.

"If we can keep this side together for three or four years then hopefully we can challenge for the title.

"But our aim this season is to better our fifth place of last season.

"However, weather can play a big part. For example if it had rained late last Saturday then Spen would have been laughing because our match finished at a quarter to five."

Austin is 38 next month, but says that the average age of his team is only 21 or 22. "Without me it would be down to 17 or 18!" he said.

Cleckheaton are without former Bradford and Bingley player Uzair Mahomed tomorrow because of commitments at Woodhouse Grove School.
