Campaigners are demanding action over an eyesore footpath which they claim is unsafe to use and attracts fly-tippers.

Residents have handed over a petition containing more than 50 names to housing bosses to protest about the state of the path between their homes in Howarth Crescent and Swain House Road in Bradford.

They claim the mud and rubble surface makes it impossible for disabled and elderly people to use it and it becomes dangerous during wet

weather.

Now Bradford Community Housing Trust has vowed to carry out improvements within the next five years as part of a multi-million pound spending plan.

But residents want to see work carried out straight away.

Maureen Frail, of Howarth Crescent, said: "Over the past few years this footpath has been allowed to deteriorate by the Council until now when it has become dangerous.

"In wet weather it is impassable because of the build-up of mud, grit, and rubbish.

"I have contacted numerous officers, requesting that the ground be levelled and that a proper path can be made.

"They have now put some loose bits of shale on the path but if you are unsteady on your feet it is very difficult to walk on. And because it looks like a tip people are treating it like a tip."

The petition has been handed over to the trust which took over Bradford Council's housing stock last year.

A trust spokesman said: "We have received the petition and will respond to it. Shortly we will be making safe any dangerous stretches of this pathway and clearing rubbish from it.

"This path is over 100 yards long and several yards wide and will cost several thousands of pounds to fully restore. We will undertake the work as soon as possible as part of our £175million district-wide improvements programme."

But Mrs Frail said: "They have promised this before and the Council used to promise it when they were in charge, but nothing happens, that is why we have done this petition."
