Barrow 32, Cougars 20 - PETER ROE'S Barrow side dumped Cougars out of the Arriva Cup -- after Keighley looked to have victory sewn up.

They ran up a 20-0 lead with a stunning first half display, and then saw their domination swept away by the determined Barrow side.

Roe was determined his home town club would not stand in the way of Barrow's cup progress, and he blasted his side into action with a half time team talk.

Nursing a 20-4 lead at the break Cougars were confident of victory, but their complacency was to be their downfall as the home side stepped up several gears. By the time the Keighley side had woken up to the fact that the game was slipping from their grasp, it was too late to increase their tempo.

Gary Moorby went into the match without five regular first team players and was forced to shuffle his team at the last minute. He was without skipper James Rushforth, forwards Danny Ekis, Craig Nipperess, Jason Clegg and Richard Mervill.

The already weakened squad was dealt a further blow when Simeon Hoyle was taken ill on the journey to Barrow and had to pull out of the team leaving Moorby to call on Lee Patterson, who made returned from injury to take over the role of hooker.

Despite the upheaval the team turned on a flawless opening performance.

They produced a storming first half display which rocked Barrow to their boots.

Moorby's young side launched wave after wave of attacks. Karl Smith just missed the final touch as he chased a cross kick from Matty Firth while Adam Mitchell and Chris Wainwright also broke away as they worked to produce a breakthrough.

The Barrow defence eventually cracked under the onslaught. Firth broke the deadlock after 20 minutes with a cross-kick which bounced into the hands of Adam Mitchell. Firth was ever eager and collected the offload to score under the posts and Mitchell tagged on the comfortable conversion.

They continued with a string of attacks which saw Matt Foster break down the left wing only to be hauled down just short of the line after producing an impressive burst of speed. His quick play-the-ball set up Mitchell and Firth, who were working together like a well-oiled machine, and Craig McDowell continue the attack before sending Smith strolling in at the opposite corner.

Mitchell added the touchline conversion which gave his side's confidence an extra boost.

They were providing top class entertainment for the travelling fans who were enjoying a day out in the sun.

McDowell kept up the pressure with a chip over the top, snapped up by Smith who found Chris Beaver in support to complete another impressive try. Mitchell added another conversion and followed up with a penalty after Dave Foster had blasted his way through the defence on a 50-metre run before being stopped on his race to the line. Barrow did not retreat and Mitchell collected the two points to put his side 20-0 up.

There was no hint of the turnaround to come even when the Border Raiders' Australian captain, James King, scored a late try to put his side on the scoreboard.

A repeat of the first half would have seen Keighley into the quarter-final of the Arriva Cup, but they conceded five second half tries without reply.

Things started badly with Matt Foster losing the ball close to his own line, allowing King to score his second with Darren Holt adding the conversion.

At 20-10 to Cougars they still looked safe, but without the extra forwards to throw into the side they were running out of staying power. Matt Leigh crossed out wide and Holt added his second conversion to cut the deficit to just four points.

Centre Andy McClure crashed over and the conversion gave Barrow the lead for the first time.

King completed the agony with his hat-trick try and Damien Reid went over late in the game to complete a second half nightmare for the Keighley team.
