THE 50th Three Peaks race went appropriately enough to a runner who has long had a special affinity to the mountainous challenge when Andy Peace of Bingley Harriers won the event for the fourth time on Sunday.

Apart from his many wins in the hills and mountains at home and abroad, Peace also has the distinction of being the only athlete to win both the Three Peaks fell running and cyclo cross race - an achievement he managed in the same season.

Last Sunday he was in the company of clubmate Ian Holmes and Borrowdale's former winner Simon Booth at the head of the field, but he ultimately had the strength to pull away on the climb up Ingleborough.

Even so, his winning margin of less than a minute over Booth made it one of the most competitive races in the long history of the event.

Peace finished the race in 2 hours 55 mins 46 secs, 10 minutes outside his record run of 1996, but still a very crisp time in the hot conditions.
