Queensbury's Year Seven girls are certainly milking their success after becoming a Powergen Champion School.

"They are walking around school in their rugby jackets, and the boys are quite jealous to be honest as they haven't even won the Yorkshire or Bradford titles," laughed

deputy head of PE Rachael Dean.

Queensbury defeated Tony-pandy Community College from the Rhondda Valley in the semi-final and Cardinal New-man Catholic Comprehensive from Warrington 20-8 in the final, both at Cardiff Athletics Stadium.

And the following day they completed a lap of honour during the half-time interval in front of 72,000 at the Powergen Challenge Cup final at the Millennium Stadium.

Dean added: "The crowd gave us a big cheer, and whenever we went near any Bulls fans they went crazy.

"The success has given the school a big lift, and next year we will not only be defending our title with these girls as Year Eights, but also putting a Year Seven girls' team in."

Queensbury's triumph was all the more laudable because about half the squad hadn't played rugby league before this season.

Dean said: "Six of the girls played outside the school, but

it was new to the other eight players.

"We knew Tonypandy would be weaker having emerged from a pool of three compared to our pool of 14, but we knew Warrington would be stronger having watched their semi-final.

"However, we scared them by scoring two tries and hitting them hard."
