A children's play area is to be created in memory of the nine-year-old girl killed in a road accident last month.

Casey's Corner will be a tribute to Casey Mason, the little girl who died at the junction of Bradford Road and Cornwall Road, Stockbridge, Keighley, while on a shopping errand for her mum.

Sue Brewer and her husband are to lease their disused allotment, on the corner of Florist Street and Hallows Road, to the newly formed Stockbridge Community Group.

The group plans to turn it into a safe haven in which young children can play away from the busy streets.

This week the project was given a cash boost with a donation from the Keighley News of £150, along with a similar sum from Captain Cash, a superhero with the News of the World, who gives money to local causes.

Sue, of Bradford Road, said: "When Casey died we really wanted to do something to make sure a thing like this would never happen again.

"I knew Casey and her family very well and this is a very personal cause for me."

She added: "The children already play in the allotment, even though it is totally overgrown. We can't keep them out. It's quite small but it's big enough to put some play equipment in and give them some trees to climb."

Sue wrote to Captain Cash for his help in setting up the play area on the back of a hymn sheet which was used at the memorial service for Casey.

Sue thanked the Keighley News for the donation.

She said: "It's really lovely to know that the newspaper is supporting this. It also means that people are responding well to the idea and are committing themselves to helping to get the project off the ground."

Keighley News editor Malcolm Hoddy said: "Casey's tragic death has touched thousands of people and highlighted the need for road safety awareness throughout the district.

"We are delighted to help get this worthy project off the ground."

Sue is looking to organise a number of fundraising events to raise the money needed to set up Casey's Corner and pay for its upkeep. She is also looking into matched funding schemes with her employer at B&Q.
