Highways chiefs are to carry out speed checks on traffic using a road in Bradford after complaints that traffic-calming measures are causing accidents.

Bradford Council introduced chicanes in Frizinghall Road two years ago to slow down traffic. But residents claim the measures have led to cars racing to get through the chicanes first, causing accidents outside their homes.

Pub manager June Sanderson is threatening to boycott her council tax after her gate was destroyed for the second time in three months by a car crashing into her garden.

The 56-year-old, who runs the Old Barn Pub in Frizinghall Road, was forced to replace her fence and garden gate after an accident in March.

Now she is facing a second repair bill after another smash outside her home last month when a vehicle knocked down her gate and crashed into a neighbour's garden.

Mrs Sanderson blames the accidents on the chicanes which she claims have turned Frizinghall Road into "a racetrack".

Now Bradford Council has announced it will carry out surveys to assess the speed and volume of traffic.

Phil Sawley, principal engineer for Shipley, said: "We have been monitoring the situation along this stretch of road over recent months and we are due to carry out a survey of traffic speeds over the next few weeks to assess the problem in that area.

"General surveys regarding the volume of traffic are also being carried out alongside Frizinghall Road as part of a study into the effects of the opening of the new Bingley Relief Road.

"We have not had any direct contact with residents about the latest incident. However we would be happy to speak to them regarding safety."

Mrs Sanderson said: "(Motorists) are flying through, there is a lot of abuse and they get quite aggressive. This was a quiet road until the chicanes were put in."
