Community leaders today called for action to stop Bradford's growing gun culture.

Two men were treated in hospital after a shooting in Carlisle Road, Manningham, early yesterday.

The men, both Asian and aged 33 and 21, sought treatment at Bradford Royal Infirmary at about 1am.

A Bradford police spokesman said their injuries were not life-threatening and an investigation had started into the incident.

"We were informed by staff at the hospital that two males had turned up with gunshot wounds," said the spokesman. "Officers attended and spoke to both of them. They were released after treatment and inquiries are ongoing."

Today, Sher Azam, president of Bradford Council for Mosques, said: "It's frightening that guns are rotating like this in public places where any one of us could be.

"It does not give very much confidence to the people who live there. Guns should be removed and the streets made safe.

"I urge people to hand over their weapons to police and to do anything that's in their power to make this city safe again."

The Vicar of St Paul's in Manningham, the Rev Bob Hill, said he was horrified by the latest incident.

"We need to remember people like Tasawar Hussain who gave his life being a have-a-go hero striving to defend a society worth having for his children and for ours," he said.

"We all have to follow his example and do what we can to rid our community of all these kinds of incidents that are becoming too frequent.

"Compared to Manchester or Liverpool, Bradford has a good record but we should not be complacent."

Councillor Choudhary Rangzeb (Lab, Manningham) said he feared the area now had a reputation for gun crime.

"Gun culture has gone crazy, there are far too many guns on our streets and Manningham is getting particularly notorious for shootings," he said.

Anyone with information about yesterday's shooting should call Bradford North Police on (01274) 376059.
