AN investigation is under way after a body was recovered by firefighters from a blazing shed in Yeadon.

The dead man is believed to be a 42-year-old from Yeadon with a partner and two children. Police have not yet named the deceased.

A post-mortem revealed he had died from burns sustained in the fire.

Detective Superintendent Chris Gregg of Pudsey Weetwood Police said: "We are inquiring into the circumstances but at this stage we do not believe that is a suspicious fire."

Fire crews were alerted by a passer-by to the blaze on allotments at Nunroyd Park between Kirk Lane and Queensway just before 11.30pm on Saturday.

They found the wood and breeze block building well alight with flames shooting up above the trees.

When firefighters managed to fight their way inside they discovered a body and police were alerted.

Sub officer Stephen Wolstenholme, of Rawdon Fire Station, said it had been a severe fire.

"We could see it from quite some distance away and when we arrived the roof had burned through and flames were above the surrounding trees.

"There were gas cylinders inside the shed which had been popping and we couldn't commit anyone inside the building at the beginning.

"We extinguished the fire and then found the body and informed the police."

The crews were at the scene for four hours and the area was cordoned off as police and fire investigation officers began an examination the scene.
