IN very wet and windy conditions at the AAA's Under-20 and Under-23 Championships at Bedford, Horsforth's Andrew Staniland won the silver medal in the Under-20 men's long jump with a leap of 7.17m.

This was into a headwind of 1.5 metres per second.

Andrew is still only 17 years -old and has two more years in this same age group.

He has now been selected to represent Great Britain juniors in the long jump against Australia and Scandinavia this Saturday in Manchester.

He will also represent Great Britain juniors in the Decathlon against Germany, France and Switzerland in France at the end of July/early August.

This follows his silver medal in the U-20 men's decathlon at the AAA's Combined Events Championships two weeks ago.

Andrew, his sister Bethany and James Heaton will form part of the 13 strong West Yorkshire Combined Events squad that will compete in the English Schools' AA Combined Events Championships in Exeter in September.

Andrew was given a bye through the regional championships. He will contest the U-20 men's decathlon.

Menston's Fraser Davies is one of the nominated reserves but with an octathlon score of 4,204 points he is likely to be invited to these national championships on a wild card entry.
