COLIN Montgomerie is backing local golfers Pam Henderson, Julie Dundas and Daniel Reeve from Rawdon Golf Club and calling on others to hit the green for Macmillan Cancer Relief this summer.

He is asking them to take part in the Longest Day Challenge 2004.

The Rawdon trio will take part in the ultimate golf marathon at Rawdon Golf and Lawn Tennis Club on July 9 to raise sponsorship to help Macmillan support people living with cancer. They will play four rounds of golf in one day.

COOKRIDGE HALL: On a very windy day the entrants for a full handicap stableford numbered an impressive 43 for the regular Thursday Seniors competition.

Coping with the conditions was far from easy and hence the six golfers carding 34 points must have had some hope that they would figure in the top three.

False hope though as they were five points behind this weeks winner, Peter Walker. For the second week in a row, Colin Wilson took second spot with 37 points, beating Kevin Campbell by one shot.

Ilkley: The Sowden Trophy was played in perfect conditions on a sunny day with no wind. This is a 36-hole medal with both rounds played on the same day. The scores are then combined and the winners were - Mrs K Chivers, 71,64,135; Mrs G Bean, 68,74,142; Mrs J Appleby, 74,71,145.

Mr Captain's Day was held on June 28. The weather was a total contrast to the previous week with non-stop heavy rain, which resulted in only 11 holes being played. Again there was a wonderful line-up of prizes for the lucky winners, who were - 1, Shirley Firth; 2, Dorothy Lazarus. Longest drive - Sue Towler. The day was finished off with a meal in the clubhouse provided by Mr Captain's wife.

Bracken Ghyll: Earlier this year no fewer than 1700 teams set out to contest the 2004 Mail on Sunday Women's National Golf Club Classic. All recognised golf clubs in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland are eligible to submit a squad of six to compete in eight eliminating rounds played on a knockout principle, each match consisting of four singles decided by match play over 18 holes.

The competition is now down to the round of 64 and Bracken Ghyll Ladies are still involved, one of only two clubs from West Yorkshire and three from the whole of the Yorkshire region.

After a first round bye, Bracken Ghyll travelled to Northcliffe Golf Club, and after a fighting 2-2 draw it was down to Karen Lampkin in fourth spot to go to sudden death, winning magnificently on the 20th.

The third round was played at Bracken Ghyll against a strong Cleckheaton side and resulted in a 3-1 win for the home side.

The venue for the fourth round was Knaresborough, and after another gritty 2-2 draw Karen was again called upon to go up the 19th and once again held her nerve to win on the 20th.

Three games in the fifth round against East Bierley finished all square with Chris Knowles securing the vital point to clinch a 2-1 victory.

The next tie is away to Hartlepool Golf Club in July, after which there will be two further rounds culminating in the quarter-finals in October, the winners of which will go through to the Grand Final in November to be held in Spain.
