THE "blue bag" waste paper collection scheme which operates in parts of North Craven is to be withdrawn because competition from Settle swimming Pool's paper trailer is too strong.

Waste management company Yorwaste, in conjunction with Craven District Council began the kerbside collection scheme last summer. More than 15,000 homes around the most densely populated areas of Craven - Skipton, South Craven and Settle - helped pioneer the scheme by placing their waste paper into the bags which are collected fortnightly to be recycled for newspapers.

The blue bag scheme has proved successful in Skipton and South Craven but just could not compete with the popularity of the recycling scheme run by the Friends of Settle Swimming Pool. The friends collect around £15,000 worth of waste paper annually in a trailer situated on the swimming pool car park.

Now Yorwaste has leaflet-dropped householders in the pool's catchment areas of Settle, Giggleswick and Long Preston to say its scheme cannot compete and will be withdrawn.

Yorwaste recycling manager John Miller said: "We did not want to step on anyone's toes, particularly a charity, so decided that we would withdraw the scheme."
