A Bradford care home at the centre of investigations by a Government watchdog, the police and social services has rejected claims of abuse and neglect.

Allerton Park Nursing Home, in Oaks Lane, Allerton, is under investigation by the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) which vets care homes to ensure they are properly run.

The CSCI, which issued a critical report on aspects of the regime at the home late last year, is currently investigating claims by two former care workers that patients had been abused and neglected at the home.

The last CSCI inspection report in October highlighted instances of verbal abuse, poor hygiene and the fact that criminal record checks on staff had not been completed.

But Fatima Shahid, managing director of Park Homes Ltd which runs Allerton Park, has described the latest allegations as "groundless, opportunistic and vindictive".

Mrs Shahid said residents and their relatives strongly supported the quality of care provided and that staff were indignant about the former employees' claims.

"The reality which people experience daily at Allerton Park is in stark contrast to the wild claims being bandied about. We expect high standards from our staff. If complaints are made, we investigate and take action."

Mrs Shahid said residents' care plans were drawn up with the help and advice of outside experts working in the NHS. The fact that relatives also played a part made a mockery of the abuse claims, she said. We collaborate fully with external agencies whose job it is to monitor what we do and we act on their recommendations," said Mrs Shahid.

The CSCI confirmed that on Monday written details of the former workers' allegations about irregularities at the home had been passed on to Park Homes management.

Allerton Park is one of five homes run by Park Homes Ltd in West Yorkshire. The company operates Hazel Bank in Daisy Hill and Holly Park in Clayton as well as homes in Leeds and Huddersfield.

An inquiry was launched in May following the death of an 84-year-old man who had been a former resident of Allerton Park.
