Another 21 speed cameras are to be installed in Bradford in a bid to cut the number of deaths and serious injuries on the road.

Seven more roads across the district have been earmarked for the new cameras.

The Government will fund the 21 fixed camera at sites which have claimed 35 deaths and serious injuries over the past three years.

The new cameras will be up and running by April next year.

The news came as West Yorkshire Casualty Reduction Partnership, which operates speed cameras across the region, was praised in a national camera efficiency report for being one of the country's best areas for getting results.

Since 2001, casualties on West Yorkshire's road have fallen by 72 per cent on stretches where the Partnership has put its safety cameras.

Steve Thornton, chairman of the West Yorkshire Casualty Reduction Partnership, said the Government's approval for its latest round of fixed camera sites in Bradford and elsewhere in the region was "official support at the highest level".

He said the Government endorsement was great news but gave credit to local people's growing support for safety cameras.

"Approval for our proposed sites for the next 12 months shows the Government acknowledges the tremendous efforts that have been made to reduce road death and injury in West Yorkshire, not just by the partnership but by the continuing and concerted commitment of the local authorities and their highways and road safety teams. It also acknowledges the scale of the challenge that still faces us," he said.

Last year, West Yorkshire recorded a toll of 102 deaths and serious injuries, the lowest number since records began 35 years ago.

But Mr Thornton said: "We need to reduce this figure even further. Approval of these sites will help us to get on with the task of identifying the county's worst casualty hot spots and making them safer for all road users."

When all the new safety cameras are up in Bradford, West Yorkshire will have a total of 222.

In Bradford, Horton Grange Road will be getting two new camera sites, Otley Road will get four as will St Enoch's Road and Westgate/White Abbey Road in the city centre.

Queensbury's Brighouse and Denholmegate Road is to get four, the M621 at Junction 5 will get one and the notorious Manor Park Bends on the A65 at Burley-in-Wharfedale will get four.
