An innocent man is in fear of his life after his front door was blasted with a shotgun as he lay in bed.

Cieran Nolan says the gunmen targeted his flat by mistake and he is desperate for them to know they have got the wrong man.

And he is angry after claiming it took police four hours to turn up after reporting the shooting.

Mr Nolan, 24, of Loughrigg Street, West Bowling, Bradford, had just gone to bed at 1am last Friday after returning home from his disabled mother Anita's flat when he heard a commotion outside.

He said: "I heard voices outside and the sound of feet running down the snicket. Then I heard the door slam shut of the flat belonging to the lad below mine.

"My girlfriend told me to look out of the window but I said I wasn't going to get involved. Then I heard Asian voices outside. The door to his flat is at the side of mine.

"The next moment there was a big bang and the bed shook. I said to my girlfriend 'that sounded like a gun' and I could smell gunpowder.

"I went to the door and there was a big hole in it the size of a tennis ball with shotgun pellets and ball bearings stuck in it.

"They had run off. My girlfriend went down to the street to phone five minutes later and called the police. But after an hour they hadn't arrived so I ran to my mum's and called them on her mobile phone. I rang them three more times before they finally arrived at 5am."

No-one was hurt in the incident but Mr Nolan said he was fearful the gunmen will return.

He said: "I don't mess about. I just look after my mum. But I am frightened these people could come back and do something worse.

"Next time I could be dead. I just want them to know they have got the wrong person and shot the wrong door. I haven't a clue what it was all about."

Mr Nolan's mother said: "He's a good lad. I am disabled in a wheelchair and he looks after me. He shouldn't have to put up with something like this.

"He has a big hole in his door but if he had been coming down the stairs it could have been much worse."

A West Yorkshire police spokesman denied that it had taken officer four hours to respond but apologised for the delay in getting officers to the scene.

"We got a call at 2.38am saying that someone had shot something at the caller's door. We arrived at 4.34am. We regret that on this occasion our response time fell below its usual high standard," said the spokesman.

"The best way forward now is for us to find out who is responsible for the damage to the door. We have recovered evidence and an investigation is on-going.

"We would urge anyone with information to contact the police on (01274) 376459 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111."
