Little Dione Padgett has struck acting gold at her first attempt.

The ten-year-old from Shipley has landed a part in Barking - a new children's drama - after her first-ever audition.

The youngster has only been with the Stage '84 drama school at Idle for six months but is now on location in her first job with friends asking for her autograph.

She has been filming near York for the 13-part series about two families who come together with the help of a magic talking dog called Georgie, whose voice is played by former Hollyoaks and Casualty actor Will Mellor.

Dione, from Shipleyfields Road, said: "I was really nervous when I went for the audition because I hadn't been to one before and there were loads of people.

"I kept thinking I would never get the part and I just couldn't believe it when it came through that I had.

"I've never done anything like this before but it's been OK learning my lines and all the people are nice - Will Mellor is really nice to me."

She said there was lots of hanging round on the set and that doing re-takes could be quite frustrating.

A tutor helps her catch up on any work she misses at High Craggs First School.

"We finish filming in October and the programme goes out then," Dione said.

"I really enjoyed doing it and would like to be a full-time actress when I am older.

"I will just have to wait and see how it goes. It's really exciting.

"Two people at school have asked for my autograph and I will be watching the programme with everyone when it's on TV."

Dione caught the acting bug from her family - her cousins have all appeared on television.

Kim Oliver has been in Bad Girls, Trish Cooke has appeared in Coronation Street and EastEnders and Peter Cooke was in the Bill.

In the series, Dione plays one of the friends of a lead character.

The show centres on an 11-year-old girl whose mum remarries and her step-father gives her a dog.

The dog can magically talk and they become soulmates and good friends with lots of adventures along the way.

Dione's sister Angela Cooke said: "She is quite an outgoing child and has previously done a lot of dance.

"She just decided to try acting and has done really well.

"We think she is quite small and quite dinky."

Teen actor Adam Scourfield is another Stage '84 pupil in the show.

He has put off a gap-year trip to New Zealand to play one of the five lead roles in the drama.

Val Jackson from Stage '84 said: "They have both done very well.

"Dione is lovely and Adam beat off hundreds to get the role."
