Colin Todd wants his own Brian Deane at City.

Todd is desperate to bring in another striker as the squad takes shape for the new League One term.

He is after a dominant target man to ease the workload on Dean Windass up front.

Todd said: "One player I really need is a centre forward. Dean and Michael Symes have done very well so far in the friendlies and we're going to have to rely a lot on him this season.

"We are short in numbers in that area and ideally we could do with someone else, in the mould of a Brian Deane. I'd like them to be a bit younger but still with some good experience."

Youngsters Kevin Sanasy and Danny Forrest are the only back-up to the two strikers who again showed a good understanding in the win over Bolton.

"I'm still looking and haven't got anyone particular in mind," added the City boss. "Obviously the problem is the budget.

"I've also got a bit of a wait with the left-sided player I'm after. We've got to see what happens at his current club because he's still got a year left on his contract and is trying to come to an agreement there."

Todd is hoping to tie up a deal with trialist Paul Henderson as back-up keeper for Jamaica international Donovan Ricketts. The Australian's tidy display against Bolton was a high spot in a performance that will have lifted spirits as the campaign gets nearer.

Todd added: "It's good to be able to see that progress is being made. I thought we had a good shape on Saturday and looked well organised.

"I keep saying it but I think the fitness levels are better than they ever have been and the fans saw that in our performance.

"It's not just with the young lads but also the more experienced players like David Wetherall and Windass who are looking good."

Jim Montgomery, the Sunderland keeper who broke Leeds' hearts in the 1973 FA Cup final, was at Valley Parade yesterday to help old pal Todd.

City have no goalkeeping coach after Andy Rhodes left for Ipswich and Montgomery offered to do a session with Ricketts and Henderson. Todd said: "Jim's still working with a couple of clubs in the north. I spoke to him a couple of weeks ago and he promised to come down when he had a free day."
