Bradford Bulls skipper Robbie Paul has confessed that it could take him until next season to master his new role of hooker.

The 28-year-old, who had previously only occasionally filled in at No 9, is still getting used to the physical demands of replacing James Lowes.

"I wouldn't say the change from half-back is difficult, but you do have to adapt," said New Zealander Paul.

"And if you are playing there regularly then you have to know how to play there properly.

"When I played at hooker occasionally, the opposition didn't have much information on which to do their homework.

"But getting used to playing hooker is like learning anything new - you have to give it time, patience and discipline."

Paul added: "I am an offensive player by inclination, but at hooker in the middle of the park you have to do more defensive chores.

"You have to get your core fitness level up. It will take me the rest of this season and possibility into next season to crack it. If you are playing out wider you still have defensive duties to do, but you do get a breather occasionally."

Paul said it helped that half-backs Paul Deacon, Iestyn Harris and himself had played together in the last three matches.

"Prior to that with Leon Pryce, Deacs or myself one of us always seemed to be injured," said Paul, "but that continuity is really important."
