Dean Windass aims to be City's top gun next term.

But the rejuvenated striker refuses to stick his neck out by naming a goal target.

Windass has been in impressive scoring form in pre-season and has struck up an instant understanding with rookie Michael Symes which bodes well for the season.

Colin Todd still wants to bring in another frontman to ease the workload but sees the 35-year-old as a big player in League One.

Windass is relishing the challenge and said: "Colin wants me to score the goals which will hopefully get us back up and that's what I will be trying my hardest to do.

"But I've never set myself targets throughout my career until last season. I shouldn't have done it then and I'm not going to again.

"Scoring five goals in the Farsley game the other week puts the pressure on me a bit. But the proof of the pudding will be when we come to the Hartlepool game when the league starts."

Windass finished joint leading scorer with Michael Branch last term. But his tally of six was not enough to save City from the drop.

It has been more than four years since Windass hit double figures when he scored ten during the first campaign in the Premiership.

His last prolific season was notching 20 in 1998-1999, 18 of those for Oxford before his move to Valley Parade in time to help City into the top flight.

But Windass is ready to set the record straight by spearheading City's recovery from the drop. He has shed a few pounds and looks sharper than ever.

Windass added: "I've worked very hard on keeping myself fit but I think losing a bit of weight could also be down to stress. With the club being the way it is, I think it's stressful for everyone.

"But I feel really good in myself, I've had a good

pre-season and hopefully I can sustain that into the league.

"The most important thing in pre-season is not to get injured in these games. It's much more about fitness than results.

"But it's a good stepping stone. It sets you up for the start of the season and the way I'm feeling at the moment, I can't wait to get going.

"The most important thing now is for the football club to get back on to an even keel and improve the results on the pitch. If I can provide the goals to get us up there then it would be brilliant."
