Sue Finnie led a rampant Yorkshire side to victory in the County Championships on her home green at Silsden.

Sue defied torrential rain to beat her rival from Dudley and District 21-8 and was backed up by Margaret Wood who won 21-15.

The Yorkshire side only suffered one defeat at Silsden as the clouds parted later in the day, to record a 248-149.

The away squad also won on their trip to the West Midlands to earn a place in the semi-finals which are to be held on August 15.

Sue has also been selected to represent Yorkshire in the annual Trans-Pennine Trophy which is due to be held on Agusut 9.

Yorkshire's County Parks team saw their chances in the British Championship come to an abrupt end with heavy defeats in both legs against the East Midlands.

In the home leg at Silsden PF only skipper Mick Walsh seemed to have any idea as his colleagues fell around him. It is feared that the whole county set up could be in jeopardy with a lack of enthusiasm throughout the squads and the imminent resignation of the main selector.

What the future holds for a once great team remains to be seen.

On a much brighter note 'Vivacious Viv' Ambrose won the Ogden Trophy on his own green. She narrowly defeated Garry Foster (Cross Roads) 21-18 in an exciting final. The Craven Club did the Valley League proud as they took advantage of a glorious day. Narrow losers in the semi-finals were David 'Action Man' Hewitt and Mick Bastow who abandoned his usual shorts to play in trousers.

The Valley Vets B team ended the Federation League's Over-60s programme with another defeat, taking the 'wooden spoon' after going down to Leeds No2. Only Margaret Jowett recorded a win, shaming her male team mates.

The Skipton Vets continue their Inter-District fixtures today (Friday) meeting strong opposition in Huddersfield. It is the last game and the series and the team is battling to avoid the bottom spot. A fair effort in the last match against Halifax leaves their fortune hanging in the balance.

Today's home leg is at Silsden Playing Fields (2pm) with hopes that it will not become the 'Killing Fields.'

Richard and Trevor Hargreaves reached the final of the Hebden Bridge Handicap Doubles only to lose 21-20 to Wendel Adams and John Simpson at the 'Midge Hole.' Roy Sanderson made a rare appearance on the competition front to qualify for the Victory Cup finals at West Melton.

The Waterloo Sweeps handicap at Blackpool is now in full swing and qualifiers already include Trevor Hargreaves, Colin Wortley and Peter Clark.

Cross Hills are on the brink of making bowling history after reaching the semi-finals of the Henry Taylor Cup. They beat Waterloo Bowling Club of Huddersfield by a narrow margin but the expected a showdown with local rivals Whinfield will not take place, as they were defeated.

The weekend's action starts tomorrow (Saturday) with the semi-finals of the Valley and Supplementary Cups. In the Valley cup odds-on favourite Cross Roads A should prove too strong for Steeton B at Sutton but a closer game is anticipated between Bradshaw A and Whins Wood A at Cross Roads.

In the semi-finals of the Supplementary Cup Sutton will be hoping for a double success when the A team meet Haworth at Highfield and Sutton B take on Whins B at Steeton.

The Skipton Merit finals are at Cononley on Sunday starting at 1.30 and have a top class field of 16 potential champions, including holder Phillip Dowgill.
