KEIGHLEY garage owner Darren Wilson is building his own 4x4 'Supercar' to take some of the fastest off-road racers in the world.

Darren, who own the KAP garage in Beecher Street, has been working on the design of a new off-road vehicle and recently raced it to its first success.

After winning a string of four-wheel-drive trials events in modified Suzuki Jimnys he has moved into the 'Comp Safari' sport.

"In trials events competitors can take as long as they want to get round a marked course, but in the Safari events it is about speed," Darren said.

To take on the top racers he set out to design his own mid-engined vehicle with a 'space frame' construction covered in fibreglass bodywork.

"We have had some teething problems but everything came together in the latest event at the Manby showground in Lincolnshire. We won the C8 class for vehicles with 2.5 - 3.5 litre engines," Darren said.

His high speed offroader has a 24-valve 2.9 litre Cosworth engine which can propel the vehicle at 120-mph over some of the roughest terrain.

"We did quite will at trials and we are still producing vehicles for customers taking part in the sport, but we decided to have a go at the high-speed action."

Together with his co-driver, father-in-law Steve McInes from Steeton, he had to retire from early events as they ironed out problems. At the latest event they won the class and were fifth overall.
