A policeman answered a husband's emergency call for help and delivered a baby girl. Afterwards, the happy father, David Wainwright, of Thornbury Avenue, Bradford, said: "He did a grand job." PC Danny Uttley, 29, who is based at the Queen's Road headquarters in Bradford, was on duty in a police car nearby when he got his chance to act as midwife. It happened when David's wife, Sylvia, started in labour. Her husband said today:

"I started to panic. I had telephoned for the ambulance and was looking out for it when I saw the policeman."

Trevor Foster, Bradford Northern's 37-year-old captain, today announced that this - his nineteenth season in Rugby League football - will be his last. "The campaign's final game will be a sad one for me," he said. "It will be difficult to retire because I have enjoyed every minute of my football, but the decision has to be made sometime. I have been fortunate in having a grand set of players with me at Odsal and a good management."
