A Keighley College student has received one of the top five marks in the country in GCSE human physiology and health.

Louise Cieciala, who was among 4,399 students nationally sitting the exam, received a letter of congratulations from the director general of the AQA (Assessment and Qualifications Alliance).

Louise applied to university last year to study midwifery, but was refused because her educational experience was not recent enough. Her 11 GCSEs were taken over 15 years ago.

"This amazing result has inspired me and I now feel confident that I can go to university after all," she said. "With the help of my college tutor, I'm going to look at all my options for routes to higher education."

Overall Keighley College students achieved a pass rate of 88.2 per cent (A to G grades). Seventy-five per cent of English students achieved A to C grades, and 86 per cent of students studying French obtained A to C grades.

"It is particularly gratifying when our students are successful because many of them did not do well at school and college provides them with a second chance," said GCSE tutor James Beattie.

Anthony Halford and Charmaine Wigglesworth are examples of this.

Neither of them was happy at school and they didn't achieve the grades they needed to progress.

But this year both received C grades in science and English so they are now able to move on to further education.

Anthony hopes to study performing arts and Charmaine is hoping to get a place on the Keighley College BTEC Graphic Design course.

Anthony said: "I didn't get on at school but college has been brilliant. You get treated like an adult, and in one year they've helped me succeed and get on the course I always wanted."

The college is running a drop-in advice service from 9am-4pm every day from now until the beginning of term.

College staff will be on hand to help students with decisions about their future A level and higher education options.
