A crime blitz on a Keighley estate has resulted in nine arrests.

Police carried out a crackdown on the Braithwaite estate on Wednesday as part of an anti-crime action day.

The area was specifically targeted after it was identified as one of the town's crime hotspots, particularly for car crime. The joint initiative was between the police, Bradford Council, Keighley Anti-Crime Partnership and the DVLA.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: "As part of the initiative police arrested nine people on suspicion of a variety of offences, including possession with intent to supply Class A drugs, criminal damage, harassment and theft."

Meanwhile, officers mounted an operation using Automatic Number Plate Recognition equipment, which instantaneously checks the number plates of passing vehicles against police computers. In total 28 vehicles were stopped and six penalty tickets issued for motoring offences. Officers from the Neighbourhood Policing Team were out on the streets giving public reassurance and chatting to residents.

They also paid visits to 15 addresses which had been subject to burglaries or vehicle crime in the last few months.

Chief Insp Simon Atkin, of Keighley police, said: "This planned police activity is the start of operations where we will provide a multi-agency approach to improve the quality of life for people who live within the Keighley division.

"With partners we are looking to tackle problems that blight people's lives on a daily basis."

Council officers supported the police in offering crime prevention advice to residents. They also cleared up litter, cut grass verges and generally helped make the area look tidier.

Cllr Andrew Mallinson, chairman of Keighley Anti-Crime Partnership and Keighley Area Committee, said: "This activity of combining localised clean-ups with policing initiatives in the Braithwaite area is great news. The success of the partnership between the council, the police and the community will bring a real difference to people's lives."
