WINNIE WORTLEY lived up her 'Wonder Woman' nickname when she won the Skipton Summer Doubles title with Derek Burgess of Whins Wood.

Winnie, a member of Keighley Bowling Club teamed up with the gritty veteran to defeat Devon's Peter Lee and Richard Baker 21-16 with a little to spare after a long day of qualification in the Keighley area.

Losing semi-finalists were Derek Seed and Martin Taylor of Settle and holders Doug Stone and Graham Lumax of Sutton.

There was a nasty shock for Whins Wood A in the Vally Cup Final at Lund Park when they were humiliated by lowly Steeton B of Division Three. The whole team flopped, with the exception of a 21-1 victory, as they game turned into a comedy of errors. The victors were led by Charlie and Norma Chaplin, the Helliwells and ex-band leader, Eric Robinson as they made up for defeat by Steeton A last year.

In the Supplementary Final Sutton A were always in control of their match against Sutton B and secured a comfortable victory by a couple of points.

Latest positions in the Hebden League see Cross Roads A almost home once again in Division One, ahead of Hebden Royd Park A. Almost relegated are Cullingworth A and one of three in a desperate battle just above them, Haworth, Lund A and Mytholmroyd WMC.

Denholme A remain in third place in Division Two but some was off the leaders, Hebden Bridge.

Oxenhope B are well clear of Cullingworth B in Division Three but both teams seem set for promotion. Denholme B are propping up the rest at the bottom of the league.

Trevor Hargreaves of Keighley Bowling Club has reached the last 64 of the Waterloo Handicap at Blackpool and will be hoping his luck holds when he plays the next round on September 18.

The qualifying rounds of the Yorkshire handicap take place tonight (Friday) at Steeton and Silsden BC with the qualifiers appearing in the final itself at Cross Hills on September 19 - a date for all local bowlers to put in their diary to support both the club and the league.

There are also qualifying rounds in the Dick Keighley Memorial Trophy on Sunday at 1.30 on the greens at Colne Legion and Foulridge. The finals are at Broughton Road on September 5.

Cross s have reached the finals of the Yorkshire Parks Brotherton Cup on Sunday when they will meet in-form Pudsey Utd A from Bradford in Round One in the Heavy Woollen area. Eccleshill A are also in the last eight.
