Branshaw golfers Steve Busfield and Steve Smith have reached the national finals of the Daily Mail Foursomes competition.

The two Steves, who play off five and six handicaps respectively, are in the last 16 of more than 3,000 pairs who originally entered the annual event.

They will play at the Forest of Arden club in Warwickshire in the national finals from October 17 to 19.

Steve Busfield said: "I have been a member at Branshaw Golf Club for about 25 years, and Steve Smith has been there even longer. We can't remember anyone else from the club ever reaching a national final like this!"

They had a bye in the first round of the competition, but have since overcome opposition from Baildon, Shipley, Bingley St Ives, Ghyll, Bolton and Blackpool.

"The last match against Blackpool was a tough one because one of their players was off plus two handicap," said Steve Busfield. "We were lucky to be drawn at home, which is a big advantage, and we made the most of it."
