The family of a teenage student, who needed major surgery to rebuild his face after a gang viciously assaulted him, is offering a reward to catch his attackers.

Former Bradford Grammar School pupil Shahid Khan, 18, was repeatedly clubbed in the face with a baseball bat and kicked in the head when he was set upon by a mob outside the Wrose Balti takeaway in Wrose Road in May.

Shahid's jaw and cheekbones were shattered and his nose smashed in the attack. He also suffered nerve damage and memory loss.

The teenager, who lived with his family in Wrose, has had to undergo several operations, including six hours of surgery to put plates in his cheekbones and redevelop his jaws. But he still faces more surgery after developing an infection in his jaw.

Five men in their twenties were arrested in connection with the assault. They were released on police bail and the Crown Prosecution Service is still considering whether to bring charges.

Now Shahid's family is offering a £1,000 reward for information leading to a successful prosecution.

His cousin Shazad Malik, 26, said: "We still need independent witnesses to come forward. As a family, we want to put forward a £1,000 reward for anyone offering information which leads to a successful prosecution. If they have concerns they could do it anonymously."

Mr Malik said Shahid had recently fulfilled his dream of being accepted on a university dentistry course. His plans seemed in ruins when he was unable to take his A-levels after the attack.

But his cousin said: "They have accepted his mock exam results and he is going to start his course very soon.

"He is still going through a lot of pain and suffering but he has been very brave and is coping well in the circumstances.''

Detective Inspector Noel Devine, of Bradford North CID, said the case was still being considered and five men remained on police bail.

He added: "The inquiry is still ongoing and any information will be looked at. The family is trying to do as much as it can to help.

The attack happened at about 10.30pm on Friday, May 21, outside the takeaway, where Shahid worked as a part-time delivery driver. Anyone with information is asked to contact Bradford North CID on (01274) 376259.
