THOUSANDS of visitors flocked to Skipton's first ever local produce festival at the weekend.

Held at Skipton Auction Mart, the event has been hailed a resounding success.

It was organised by North Yorkshire County Council to celebrate the very best in local foods and crafts.

Gordon Gresty, the council's director of business and community services, said: "The county council is delighted to have supported an event that helps local producers expand their markets and gives residents the opportunity to sample the top quality food and drink that is available on their doorstep."

Attractions included demonstrations by TV chef Sophie Grigson and the famous Rylstone WI Calendar Girls who baked a cake. Top chef Stephanie Moon, who was brought up in Tosside, also demonstrated her skills in the specially adapted theatre-style kitchen.

Stephanie, who trained at the town's Craven College, is now executive chef at Rudding Park, near Harrogate.

She said: "I have a huge commitment to buying local produce wherever possible. I'm a farmer's daughter so it's important for me to support North Yorkshire's rural economy."

More than 150 stalls showcased a wide range of quality food, drink and specialist crafts from around the county.
