An armed robber blasted off a shot after demanding cash from post office staff in a terrifying daylight raid in Bradford today.

A gang of men, at least one of them brandishing a gun, burst into the post office in Beldon Lane, off Great Horton Road.

No one was seriously hurt in the attack, but several of the staff were left in shock after facing the intruders.

A police spokesman confirmed a single shot had been fired but confirmed no one had been injured.

Police were called to the scene after the robbery at Beldon Hill Post Office just before 10am, where the scene was cordoned off as officers began their inquiries.

A police spokesman said: "A number of men went in and demanded money. A shot was fired but no one was hurt. Our officers are at the scene now."

Investigations were continuing and it was not yet clear whether the raiders escaped with any cash or whether any vehicles were involved.

Ambulance paramedics who were called to the scene treated two people for shock, they said, but no one was taken to hospital.

A Post Office spokesman said it was still not clear if the raiders got away with any cash.

"All we know is that two of our workers have been badly shaken by the experience. It will have been terrifying for them. We're waiting to hear from the police if the men got away with anything, details are still coming in."

The spokesman said the post office would stay closed until further notice.

The post office manager, who asked not to be named, said today everyone was shaken by the ordeal but they were safe.

The police's armed response unit was called to the scene and a forensic team was beginning a detailed examination of the post office and the area around it.

Officers continued to guard the scene as the shocked post office staff were taken to give full statements at a police station.

The branch, in the middle of a busy residential area, is converted from an end-terrace house and as well as the post office, offers services such as shoe repairs and dry cleaning.
