A trainee construction worker who turned his life around after getting a criminal conviction for his behaviour in the build-up to the Bradford riots has received a nationwide award.

Abdul Mussawir Ali was highly commended for his hard work and commitment during the YouthBuild award ceremony held at the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television yesterday.

Back in 2002, Mr Ali, who is now 21, served 80 hours of community service and paid £90 costs for threatening behaviour after an incident on the day of the riots, but before the widepread disturbances began.

Having spent almost two years developing experience and knowledge with the project which gives practical training in construction work, Mr Ali, of West Bowling, Bradford, has got on track and is now planning to finish his training and embark on a career linked to the project.

"I'm really proud of what I have achieved," he said.

"I've made a change to the little things in my life, as well as the bigger issues, and my opportunities have changed immensely."

YouthBuild is a project set up to encourage youngsters who have had difficulties in school to train for a career in construction.

Following initial training in literacy and lifeskills run by the Bradford-based Accent Community Partnerships, participants spend the rest of the project working for three days of the week on site, with two days in college.

The aim of the project is to teach skills and knowledge in a structured way, preparing trainees for work placements that might develop into long-term job prospects.

There are several YouthBuild projects around the UK and each year the conference is held at a different YouthBuild location. Awards are presented to those who have shown particular improvement through personal development and commitment to the project.

Tariq Khan, 18, from Little Horton, was also awarded a commendation for his development during the project.

Heather Jacklin, a spokesman from Accent Community Partnerships, said: "Giving people the opportunity to improve themselves is what this is all about.

"Today's event is held in recognition of the achievements that have been made."

Shipley MP Christopher Leslie presented some of the awards and said: "There are many Bradford and Shipley young people who could benefit from the sense of achievement, motivation and accomplishment delivered through the YouthBuild scheme."
