A TEAM of Under-11 schoolboys from Keighley were recently invited to Glasgow to help celebrate the 100th anniversary of schools football in the city.

A fixture between Glasgow and Bradford schoolboys has taken place for several years, but only in the last few years have Keighley been invited to plan an annual fixture.

The 17 boys who made up the squad were selected following trials held at Marley at the beginning of November and were coached by Richard Hewitt, who has many years of coaching junior football.

On their first night in Scotland the Keighley side played against their hosts and Bradford Boys played East Kilbride. The following morning the fixtures were reversed, and although the Keighley side lost both games the boys enjoyed a fantastic experience

The squad stayed at the 4-star Thistle Hotel in the city centre and the coaching staff were guests at a Gala Dinner with the Glasgow Schools Football Committee and executive members. Special guest at the dinner was Celtic's 'Lisbon Lion' Jim Craig.

The team played in a new 'Town Team kit in Keighley's colours complete with a the town's coat of arms thanks to sponsorship from Advanced Couplings Ltd, Haworth, Clark, Whitehill (Accountants) and Spectrum Financial Services.

Keighley are to play a game against Bradford B at King George V Playing Fields, Canal Road, Bradford, at 2pm on Thursday, December 23.
