Mirfield have resigned from the Bradford League due to a lack of players.

They only joined from the Central Yorkshire League in 2001, were promoted from the Second Division in 2002 and have successfully battled against relegation from the First Division for the past two seasons, finishing third from bottom on each occasion.

Mirfield's resignation means that Bankfoot will not be relegated from the First Division.

A press release from the Bradford League reads: "Following an emergency meeting of the management committee, the League regretfully accepts the resignation of Mirfield CC.

"Mirfield stated in their letter of resignation that 'the club has insufficient players to maintain two senior teams and were not making enough progress in terms of recruiting.

"'It was decided, in fairness to the Bradford League and to assist in fixture planning, a decision needed to be made sooner rather than later'.

"As a result of this resignation, Bankfoot CC first XI, who were relegated in 13th place at the end of last season, are re-instated to the First Division for season 2005.

"Windhill, who were Mirfield's opponents in the first round of the Sovereign Health Care Priestley Cup and Shield competitions, will receive walkovers into the second rounds."

Bradford League chairman Graham Reid said: "It is very sad when a club resigns from the league - particularly when they are a First Division club - on the back of a lack of players.

"They have only been in the league for four years, but we thank them for their contribution and wish them all the best in the future.

"We hope that their problem with a lack of players is soon resolved and that it doesn't lead to the demise of cricket at their well-appointed Memorial Park ground."

Mirfield's withdrawal means that both the first and second teams will have 14 clubs in each division and can play each other on a home and away basis.
