A new Oriental restaurant has opened in Bradford, marking the completion of a multi-million-pound leisure park in the city.

A deal has been sealed for the last available unit on the Leisure Exchange development in Vicar Lane.

It has been filled by the Abacus Restaurant, which was being launched last night.

The company which owns and runs the Leisure Exchange site now values it at £40 million, and it is the tenth largest development of its kind in the country.

It was opened in 2001 by development company JJ Gallagher and is now home to a 16-screen, 3,200 seater Cineworld cinema, a 28-lane bowling alley and a £5 million Express By Holiday Inn hotel with 120 bedrooms.

The development was boosted further last month when the £5 million Gala Casino opened its doors.

The business employs more than 100 people.

JJ Gallagher development director Simon Newsholme said the firm was delighted the scheme had fulfilled its potential.

He said: "We thought this would be a good strong scheme in Bradford in terms of leisure, at the time it was the only large city in the country which did not have a leisure complex in its city centre.

"All of our tenants tell us they are now trading strongly and the indications from the Gala Casino which opened a couple of weeks ago are good as well."

The new Abacus Restaurant will employ around 20 people and will start recruiting from the Bradford area next year.

It is the latest restaurant to open on the site alongside the Nando's chain, Frankie and Benny's and Pizza Hut.

The company already operates a restaurant in a retail park in Horwich, near Bolton, and is hoping to establish the business as a national chain.

Restaurant manager Tony Lau said: "We were looking for prime sites for our second restaurant and we felt that Bradford was crying out for a restaurant like ours. We think we will offer the city something new.

"Our cuisine is very contemporary and is about fusion of different styles."

The launch of the new restaurant means all of the units on the site have been occupied.

The site's owners are now looking to sell an empty plot of land next to the Vicar Lane entrance to the development, which can house a 5,000 sq ft building.

JJ Gallagher submitted a successful bid to Bradford Council in November 1999 to develop the Leisure Exchange, which opened in 2001.
