Bradford Council is expected to approve price rises in leisure charges such as swimming and sports hall hire.

The increases have been come about because of inflation and investment costs which the authority says have led to improvements in facilities.

Under the package, to be considered on Tuesday by the Council's executive, those who use the Council's leisure centres are expected to face increases.

Swimming sessions for adults would rise by 20p and for children by 10p. Charges for the use of local-authority community halls and sports pitches would increase by five per cent.

Fees for the use of fitness suites would rise by three per cent, although the charge at Keighley Leisure Centre, the Richard Dunn Sports Centre and Thornton Recreation Centre would remain unchanged until the completion of major refurbishment programmes.

There will be no change in Passport to Leisure annual registration fees, and the charge for adults using the card for swims will remain the same. The cost of junior 'passport' swims will be reduced by 20p to 50p per visit. Library fees would be simplified, with some increased charges for overdue items. Reserving books in stock, and internet access, would be free. Admission to museums and galleries will also remain free.

The proposals, if approved, would all take effect from Tuesday, February 1.

Councillor Simon Cooke, the Council's executive member for arts and leisure, said increases reflect investment: "There has been substantial investment over the past few years on refurbishments and other improvements. We want to ensure that we retain high standards and hope to see more people taking advantage."
