YOUNG rugby league players from South Craven turned on the style in a day-long 'touch rugby' tournament on Monday.

Primary Schools throughout the area took part in competitions for both boys and girls organised by Cougar star, Matt Foster, the club's community development manager.

"It was an absolutely superb competition which showed the improvement in skills from what was already a high standard last year," Matt Foster said.

Pupils at the eight schools had been working hard on their athletic and ball handling skills to prepare for the competition which saw the Sutton County Primary School team hold on to their title in the boys competition.

Last year's girls winners, Cowling, also reached the final but were just beaten by the Eastburn girls team.

"The standards in the girls competition were particularly high and all the players showed a real understanding of the game," he said.

Schools taking part in the coaching and competition were: Cowling, Cononley, Eastburn, Glusburn, Kildwick, Lothersdale, Steeton and Sutton CP.

In the boys semi-finals Sutton beat Kildwick 20-8 and Eastburn beat Glusburn 12-4. Sutton CP beat Eastburn 16-4 in the final.

The girls competition saw Cowling beat Sutton CP 8-4 and Eastburn beat Glusburn 16-12 in the semi-final. In the final Eastburn beat Cowling 16-4.
